Origin: From Brown & Bain to a Family Firm

Before founding his own practice, Brent Gunderson was the partner in charge of the estate planning and business immigration practice groups at Brown & Bain, P.A. in Phoenix — a firm later absorbed into Perkins Coie, one of the country’s larger national law firms. He opened his own Mesa practice in 1996 and built it into what is now Gunderson Law Group in Tempe. His son, Adam Gunderson, later joined the firm after clerking at a multinational firm in Australia, a boutique firm in Salt Lake City, and a tech company’s general counsel office in Provo, Utah.

Practice Areas

The firm’s immigration practice covers business and family-based immigration petitions, employment-based immigration, naturalization and citizenship, and investor visas (including EB-5 and E-2). Immigration sits alongside the firm’s other core practices — trust and estate planning, trust and probate administration, elder law, business formation, and asset protection — reflecting a full-service model rather than an immigration-only boutique.

Track Record

Immigration outcomes turn on individual facts and shifting federal policy rather than generating a citable litigation record the way a civil appeal would, and the firm’s own materials don’t publish a specific case-result tally. Its public professional record instead runs through more than 30 years of continuous practice and sustained AILA membership across both Gundersons.

Note: Past results, where applicable, do not guarantee any future outcome.

Client Voice

A review on Avvo describes Adam Gunderson as professional, friendly, and prompt in email communication. Awesome Attorneys did not locate a larger, independently verifiable body of quotable reviews specifically addressing the firm’s immigration work as of the research date.

Community

Brent Gunderson serves on the Arizona Community Foundation’s Professional Advisory Board and previously served on the Board of Trustees of the Maricopa County Bar Foundation; he is also a member of Wealth Counsel, Elder Counsel, NAELA, and STEP (a worldwide trust and estate professional association). Both Gundersons are members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

Recognition

Brent Gunderson holds Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV rating (peer review) and is listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in American Law. AILA membership, held by both attorneys, reflects active engagement with the field’s leading professional association, though it is a membership rather than an examination-based certification — Arizona does not currently certify immigration law as a specialty at all.

The Arizona Legal Backdrop

What follows is general legal information, not legal advice.

Immigration law is federal, governed by the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. § 1101 et seq.), so most of this practice doesn’t run through Arizona statute. Arizona employers must verify work eligibility through E-Verify under A.R.S. § 23-214, directly relevant to the firm’s business-immigration and employer-compliance work. Arizona’s 2010 SB 1070 enforcement law and the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2012 decision in Arizona v. United States, which struck down or narrowed several of its provisions on federal preemption grounds, remain the key reference points for where Arizona law can and can’t operate in this federally-controlled field.

The Awesome Attorneys Assessment

Gunderson Law Group’s genuine strength is continuity and breadth: three decades of practice, a second-generation attorney now sharing the caseload, and an unusual ability to coordinate immigration status with estate planning and business structuring for clients who need more than one area of law addressed together.

The honest caveat: this is a full-service firm where immigration is one practice group among several — clients whose primary or sole need is complex, contested immigration litigation may be better served by a dedicated immigration-only practice.
